BP Environmental management: Gulf of Mexico response.

BP strives to minimize the environmental impact of its activities by applying management systems and standards and using innovative technology in its operations.

Environmental and social responsibility in sensitive areas:

BP takes steps to identify and manage potential environmental and social risks associated with access to sensitive areas.

We have dedicated environmental processes for major projects and those that seek access to sensitive areas, including internationally designated protected areas. We have piloted an integrated approach to identify potential environmental and social impacts in new projects which are intended to improve our consistency and effectiveness in mitigating such issues.


A screening process aims to make sure we take all necessary environmental precautions before entering a sensitive area.
 

None of our new projects entered a protected area in 2010. Our protected areas classification includes the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) I-IV, Ramsar and World Heritage designations.



BP takes a systematic and disciplined approach to operations, using management systems and standards to minimize its environmental impact.



BP operates throughout the world in locations, terrains and climates that are tremendously diverse and frequently challenging. We aim to minimize our environmental impact by taking a systematic and disciplined approach to operations, using sophisticated risk assessment techniques that directly inform our business plans.

We are incorporating our environmental management systems into our group-wide operating management system that helps us set priorities for operations based on assessment of the key risks, including those related to environmental and social performance. We believe this integration will promote greater efficiency and consistency across the business.

We conduct, at least annually, a formal process to identify and assess risks and emerging issues, including environmental and social issues. We aim to manage environmental and social risk during every phase of our operations: launching new projects, carrying out day-to-day operations and bringing a project to a close.

Our major operating sites are all certified under the international environmental management system standard ISO 14001, with the exception of the Texas City petrochemicals plant, which is seeking certification in 2010.

In our routine operations, we strive to minimize the impact we have on the environment by identifying risks during the project set-up and using technology to reduce or remedy any impacts.
